On November 29, 1783, at 10:50 p.m. (UTC−5), a Mfa 5.3 earthquake occurred in the U.S. state of New Jersey.[2][3] It was the state's first recorded seismic event.[4] It is estimated that the quake was the largest and strongest that the state has ever recorded.[4] The earthquake caused intensity VII damage on the Mercalli intensity scale.[5]
