The 1940 Pittsburgh Panthers football team represented the University of Pittsburgh as an independent in the 1940 college football season. Led by second-year head coach Charley Bowser, the Panthers compiled a record of 3–4–1.[1]

Pittsburgh was ranked at No. 30 (out of 697 college football teams) in the final rankings under the Litkenhous Difference by Score system for 1940.[2]

The team played home games at Pitt Stadium in Pittsburgh.
