As part of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a battle has been taking place between the Russian Armed Forces and the Ukrainian Armed Forces for control of the city of Chasiv Yar and the surrounding villages. The battle began on 4 April 2024 with the first direct assault on the city by Russian forces,[14][15] and has thus far seen the confirmed capture of the Kanal district and the claimed capture of the Novyi district by Russia, the two easternmost of the city, and the advance of their forces to all land east of the Siverskyi Donets – Donbas Canal separating the city, including land of surrounding settlements.
The city is seen as pivotal toward further Russian advance in Donetsk Oblast, due to its high elevation and strategic location, in contrast to the last major battle in the area, the battle of Bakhmut, which saw warfare tactics and casualties comparable to those of World War II for little Russian strategic gain. Analysts have stated that a Russian seizure of the city would likely allow them to advance as far as the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, the two largest settlements in Donetsk Oblast not under Russian occupation.
