Islay (/ˈli/) is a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada within the County of Vermilion River.[2] Previously an incorporated municipality, Islay dissolved from village status on March 15, 1944, to become part of the Municipal District of Vermilion Valley No. 482.[3] The community was named after Islay, in Scotland, the ancestral home of pioneer settlers.[4]

Islay is located 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) north of Highway 16, approximately 36 kilometres (22 mi) west of Lloydminster. Its first school opened in 1907.[5]
