Alfonso Cuarón directed Roma (2018), Mexico's first film to win the award.

This is a list of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956.[1] The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue.[1][2] The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films.[2]

The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018.[3] The deadline for submissions was 1 October 2018,[3] with the Academy announcing a list of eligible films on 8 October.[4] A total of 89 countries submitted a film, with 87 of those being accepted.[4] Two countries submitted a film for the first time.[5] Malawi sent The Road to Sunrise and Niger sent The Wedding Ring.[5]

From the longlist, nine finalists were shortlisted in late 2018,[6] with the final five nominees announced on 22 January 2019.[7] Roma by Alfonso Cuarón won the award, the first Mexican film to do so.[8]
