Mastodon is an open source, self-hosted, social networking service. Mastodon uses the ActivityPub protocol for federation which allows users to communicate between independent Mastodon instances and other ActivityPub compatible services. Mastodon has microblogging features similar to Twitter, and is generally considered to be a part of the Fediverse.[7][8][9]
Mastodon was created by Eugen Rochko and revealed to the public via Hacker News in October 2016.[10] Not long after, it quickly gained popularity and became the dominant platform in the fediverse and overtaking the previous leader, GNU social. It gained significant adoption in 2022 following the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk.[11][12][13]
The project is maintained by the German non-profit Mastodon gGmbH.[14] Development of Mastodon is crowd-funded, and does not contain any support for advertisements or monetized features.
In mid-January 2025, the Mastodon team announced[15] it would transition to a new non-profit to run the Mastodon project[16][17][18] and called for funding assistance.[19]

We are taking the time to select the appropriate jurisdiction and structure in Europe. Then we will determine which other (subsidiary) legal structures are needed to support operations and sustainability.
it is planning to create a new nonprofit organization in Europe and hand over ownership of entities responsible for key Mastodon ecosystem and platform components. This means one person won't have control over the entire project. The organization is trying to differentiate itself from social networks controlled by CEOs like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.
we are going to transfer ownership of key Mastodon ecosystem and platform components to a new nonprofit organization... "When founder Eugen Rochko started working on Mastodon, his focus was on creating the code and conditions for the kind of social media he envisioned," Mastodon says. "The legal setup was a means to an end, a quick fix to allow him to continue operations. From the start, he declared that Mastodon would not be for sale and would be free of the control of a single wealthy individual, and he could ensure that because he was the person in control, the only ultimate decision-maker."
To become a more user-focused paradise of "resilient, governable, open and safe digital spaces," Mastodon is going to need a lot more funding. The blog called for donations to help fund an annual operating budget of $5.1 million (5 million euros) in 2025. That's a massive leap from the $152,476 (149,400 euros) total operating expenses Mastodon reported in 2023.
