Matthew Joseph Newton (born 22 January 1977)[2][3] is an Australian actor, writer, and director, and son of TV personalities Bert and Patti Newton. Newton's career was derailed after he perpetrated several acts of domestic violence and assault against female partners in the 2000s and early 2010s, widely reported in the Australian media. This led to treatment in a psychiatric unit for bipolar disorder. Since then, he has relocated to the United States and mostly keeps out of the public eye, although he has returned to writing and directing films.
