The Case of Paul Peacher

During the height of the Great Depression, Paul Peacher, a sheriff and farmer from Earle, Arkansas was convicted of enslaving eight African American men to work on his land.[1] For this crime, Peacher lost his title as Sheriff, and was sentenced to two years probation. He also had to pay a $3,500 fine, which was partially paid by the townspeople in Earle.[1]
