The University of Vermont (UVM),[a] officially titled as University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, is a public land-grant research university in Burlington, Vermont.[6] Founded in 1791, the university is the oldest in Vermont and the fifth-oldest in New England, making it among the oldest in the United States.[7] It is one of the original eight Public Ivies.[8]
UVM is organized into ten schools, including seven undergraduate colleges, an honors college, a graduate college, and the Robert Larner College of Medicine. Vermont's largest hospital complex, the University of Vermont Medical Center, has its primary facility on campus. UVM has a history of student-led activism.[9] Considered one of the most sustainable campuses in the United States, the university has committed to carbon neutrality by 2030.[10][11] In 2022[update], the university attracted $263 million in research and development funding.[12][13] It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".[14]
