Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street è un musical scritto da Stephen Sondheim (musiche e testi) e Hugh Wheeler (libretto), vincitore di otto Tony Award nel 1979, basato sul dramma teatrale Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street di Christopher Bond del 1973, a sua volta ispirato al romanzo Sweeney Todd - Il diabolico barbiere di Fleet Street (The String of Pearls) del 1846. Quest'ultimo aveva già visto una trasposizione teatrale nel 1847, con il nome di The String of Pearls; or, The Fiend of Fleet Street scritta da George Dibdin Pitt.
L'edizione originale diretta da Harold Prince debuttò all'Uris Theatre il 1º marzo 1979, e le repliche si susseguirono ininterrottamente fino al 29 giugno 1980.
