Giga-

Giga ialah awalan unit dalam sistem metrik menandakan faktor (bentuk pendek) bilion (10⁹ atau 1 000 000 000 ). Ia mempunyai simbol G.

Giga berasal dari perkataan Yunani γίγαςcode: grc is deprecated , yang bermaksud "gergasi". Kamus Bahasa Inggeris Oxford melaporkan penggunaan tulisan giga paling awal dalam erti kata ini dalam Laporan Persidangan IUPAC ke-14 pada tahun 1947: "Awalan berikut untuk singkatan untuk nama unit harus digunakan: G giga 10⁹×".^[1]

Apabila merujuk kepada unit maklumat dalam pengkomputeran , seperti gigabait, giga kadang-kadang boleh bermakna 1 073 741 824 (2³⁰), walaupun penggunaannya tidak konsisten, bertentangan dengan piawaian dan telah digalakkan oleh organisasi standard.^[2]^[3] Ketidakkonsistenan adalah gigabit tidak pernah (atau sangat jarang) digunakan dengan tafsiran binari awalan, sementara gigabait kadangkala digunakan dengan cara ini.
