Nedavne molekulski i morfološki dokazi idu u prilog tome da su Fabaceae jedna monofiletska porodica. Ovo gledište ne podržava samo stepen međusobne povezanosti koju pokazuju različite grupe unutar porodice u odnosu na one među mahunarkama i njihovim najbližim srodnicima, već i sve nedavne filogenetičke studije zasnovane na analizi sekvenci DNK.[8][9][10][11] These studies confirm that the Leguminosae are a monophyletic group that is closely related with the Polygalaceae, Surianaceae and Quillajaceae families and that they belong to the order Fabales.[12]
