Louisiana has 64 parishes (counties). It has 304 municipalities (cities, towns, or villages). Four of the municipalities in Louisiana are "consolidated city-parishes". This means that these cities and the counties around them have one government.[2] 7.8% of the state has municipalities on it. 46.4% of people in Louisiana live in municipalities.[1]
Groups of people living in an area can become municipalities if enough people live there.[3] Municipalities can be cities, towns or villages. In Louisiana, a city has at least five thousand people living in it. A town has more than one thousand people living in it, but fewer than five thousand people living in it. A village has one thousand or fewer people living in it.[4] The governor of a municipality can change whether it is a town, city, or village. This happens if the board of aldermen ask for it and if a different number of people live there now.[5]
The biggest municipality in Louisiana is New Orleans. It has the most people (383,997 people live there) and also has the biggest area (169.49 sq mi (439.0 km2)).[6] The municipality with the fewest people is Mound, which has twelve people living in it. The municipality with the smallest area is Napoleonville, which is 0.17 sq mi (0.44 km2) in size.[1] Natchitoches has been a municipality the longest. It has been a municipality since 1712. Central is the newest municipality. It has been a municipality since 2005. [7]
